2004 Frias Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

by Admin 11/15/2007 1:23:00 PM

Grown on the slopes of the Frias Family Spring Mountain estate where rocky volcanic soil dominates.  The grape for this wine were hand selected in the vineyard and then hand sorted twice in the winery to make sure only the best grapes reached the fermentation tank.   The wine was aged for 22 months in small French oak barrels. This Cabernet explodes with dark chocolate, blackberry and raspberry.  This wine is sweetly perfumed with ripe fruit and exotic spices such as vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom as well as cedar, cigar box and sandalwood.  On the palate it has cassis as well as dark berries carries through with a mocha-berry underpinning.  The silky mouth feel, yet bold structure and balanced acids highlight the glory of mountain grown fruit in this concentrated wine.  The long finish of fleshy ripe dark fruit and spicy, earthy background also reminiscent of the forest floor add an element of complexity. This cab well easily age for 15 to 20 years with proper temperature control storage. Why pay $500 for cult wines when you could drink this gem for $69.99.  We could only get 5 cases.     Lee’s rating 95   WS rating 94

Our Picks

  1. 2006 Marin Codax Albarino
Alberino is a white grape that is rapidly growing in popularity. It is a food friendly wine showcasing a pale yellowish color with touches of tropical fruits.  It is an very aromatic wine that is complex with very crisp clean finish.

    ACU’s rating 89pts

  2. 2005 Pariso Chardonnay

I love this Chardonnay’s from Monterey County.  This wine is very rich with tropical fruits allied to a creamy mouth feel, toasty oak and vanilla nuances-all balanced by refreshing acidity.  Excellent with richly-sauced poultry and seafood dishes.

    ACU’s rating 90pts

  3. 2005 Qupe Syrah

Winery owner Robert Lindquist has been making wonderful Syrah for many years and this is another example.  Robert’s goal is to make wines with impeccable balance that can be enjoyed in their youth.  The rich fruit and soft tannins combined with good acidity allow it to age beautifully for 3 to 5 yrs.

    ACU’s rating 90pts

  4. 2006 Castle Rock Pinot Noir

    Sonoma, California

Castle Rock sourced another great Pinot Noir, this time from Sonoma.  This is a well made, medium bodied Pinot that is a good choice for an everyday sip.
